We took a selection of 30 students, following an application process, to visit the offices of 3 sponsors, allowing them to gain a key snapshot into three different areas of the city. The sponsors involved were RBS, BP and Allen and Overy. This gave students a wide range of first hand exposure of life within the city and potential career opportunity.
Dine With Deloitte
6th December 2012
On Thursday 1st December, 40 students were selected for an exclusive Christmas Dinner with Deloitte at the Angel Hotel, Leamington Spa. Our primary aim was to allow students to gain a firsthand insight directly from current employees in varying divisions through quizzing them about their own experiences, knowledge and stories. With Christmas crackers, mince pies and exquisite food, this event was a huge success with places being heavily oversubscribed; resulting in only candidates with a high chance of being fast tracked getting selected. Good food, a great atmosphere and festive spirit saw Deloitte representatives and students staying longer than the assumed 10pm deadline, underlining the extremely positive feedback from the event.
BP Commercial Business Game

BP is one of the largest marketers and traders of oil and gas in the world. Integrated Supply and Trading (IST) is BP’s face to the traded markets, including oil, gas & power, and a dedicated financial markets trading team. Our Citi Panel Event gave thirty students the opportunity to listen to and meet a range of Citi employees from the Investment Banking Department, Trading, Technology and Human Resources. The Economics Society arranged room booking and Networking Drinks for many of our career events, including this one, which gave students a chance to have an informal chat with the employees following the formal talk.
BP Trading Game
3rd November 2012
Our BP Trading Game allowed students to combine their interests in commodities trading with the quick-decision making that is required in a competitive team environment. With ten teams of five taking part, all ranging from different years of study and disciplines, the best team was the one that made the most profitable “arbitrage” and “speculative” trades in the light of new market information. Ultimately a team of first year students took first place – where the prize was a unique trip to the BP Trading floor in Canary Wharf and a chance to meet employees on the job. Following on from this success, we then also organised a BP Commercial Business Game.
RBS Moveable Feast
19th October 2012
RBS offered the opportunity to attend an exclusive invitation-only, progressive dining experience; a Moveable Feast in its truest sense. Successful applicants spent the evening devouring each course in one of three restaurants. At each restaurant they had the chance to dine with either a group of Graduates, Vice Presidents or Managing Directors. This provided a rare chance to gain real insight into the workings of GBM and get a step ahead of the rest, all over a tasty meal. Furthermore, guests who were identified as showing strong potential within the business had the chance of gaining a fast track for the application process.

Teach First School Visit
1st February 2012
In February the Economics Society teamed up with one of our charity sponsors, TEACH FIRST, to give members the opportunity to gain work experience in teaching and charity work. It was an opportunity to volunteer to teach Maths or English to children in the local area who are bright, but in groups that are statistically unlikely to go to University. As a society we realise that not everyone wants to go into Investment Banking and and so it was great to see our members getting involved.
